1664 – 1667Built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on a rocky islet off Malvan, its curving walls were laid in molten lead. Inside stands the only temple in the world dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj himself.
12th centuryThe 'Eastern Gibraltar' — triple ramparts, 27 bastions and a hidden underwater wall that wrecked enemy ships. Kanhoji Angre's navy made it unconquerable for decades.
Capital, 1674The mountain capital where Shivaji Maharaj was crowned. A ropeway or 1,700 steps take you to the Maha Darwaja, the royal court and the Jagdishwar temple above the clouds.
17th centuryThe 'Golden Fort' guards Harnai harbour from its own island, with a shipbuilding yard once famous across the Arabian Sea. Reach it by fishing boat at low tide.
16th centuryPerched where the Shastri river meets the sea, Jaigad's bastions look out over one of the most beautiful estuaries on the entire Kokan coast.
